Indonesia rejects installation of U.S. military bases on its territory
Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin stated that the country will not accept U.S. military bases on its territory, despite the deepening of bilateral defense cooperation.
Jakarta and Washington established, in April, a Defense Cooperation Partnership, focused on training, capacity-building, and military interoperability. According to Sjamsoeddin, however, cooperation must remain subordinate to Indonesia's national needs and interests.
The position comes amid the strong U.S. military presence in the Indo-Pacific. Russia has also been warning that NATO expansion and the deployment of new weaponry to the region increase tensions and the risk of confrontations.
